Studiengebühren	3.500 € pro Semester The schedule of tuition fee payment is determined on the basis of consulate/visa regulations. In case of applicants coming from visa restricted countries, payment of the full tuition fee (1st and 2nd semester) is required. Details will be indicated in the letter of admission. After a successful admission process, applicants are expected to arrive and academically register until the third week of September in the fall intake and until the third week of February in the spring intake. Exceptionally, they can still participate in the Academic Registration on the 4th week of the semester. If they fail to arrive by this deadline, they cannot register academically and cannot start their studies in that particular academic year. In case of visa rejection or other circumstances beyond the applicant’s control which prevent the applicant from starting their studies, a postponement for the next academic year/semester or a full refund can be requested. To request a refund, applicants must submit an official refund request along with the official documentation that proves the reason why they cannot start their studies. Einstiegsqualifikation

Masterstudium / Masterabschluss (oder höher) Who should apply? We expect applicants to be interested in the contemporary developments and challenges in literature and culture, literary and cultural heritage worldwide, and languages in general. It is an advantage if the applicant has an MA in literary studies, languages, philosophy, cultural studies, theatre or film studies, or translation. Application requirements: MA degree, a demonstrated proficiency in English (B2/Intermediate). In the final phase of the application process, applicants present their research plan and motivation in a personal or online interview. The programme accepts applications in the following areas of research: Theories of literature and culture British literary history from the Renaissance to the present British intellectual and cultural history, including arts, music, popular culture. American literary history up to the present; intellectual and cultural history, including arts, music, popular culture. Women/Gender Studies with an Anglo-American horizon. The Multimediality of (Anglo-American) Culture Selected topics in Canadian, Indian, South-African and other post-colonial literatures. Übersicht

The PhD study programme, “Literatures and Cultures in English” is affiliated with the Doctoral School of Literature and Culture, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Szeged. Accredited since 1995, the program is designed to provide students with interpretive skills, academic research tools, and critical perspectives in the fields of British and American literary and cultural studies. Students are introduced to advanced theoretical fields such as history and theory of literature, the multimediality of culture and some aspects of gender studies. Regular practice of academic research tools in the information society and the digital humanities is also presented during the course of studies. Students participate in interactive seminars, research seminars and thesis writing practice.

Programmstruktur

The study programme comprises of four years, during which two years are devoted to regular course work with mandatory participation (cf. study matrix). This period is concluded by a gate-way complex exam which only once can be repeated. The third and fourth years are mainly devoted to individual research and writing the dissertation. In the meantime students are expected to attend scholarly conferences and publish scholarly articles. During one semester they also teach a BA course in cooperation with their supervisors. The dissertation must be submitted not later than 5 years after the enrolment in the program.

Karrieremöglichkeiten

Holders of a PhD in Literary Studies may pursue a career in academia and education, or may choose to work for cultural organizations, publishing and media companies, national or local administration, or in the creative industry.
