Excellent Achievements in the latest QS Subject Ranking

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the UK-based international ranking agency, recently published its ranking lists of sciences and disciplines


According to the results published on 22 March, the University of Szeged was ranked first in the field of biological sciences in Hungary. It also moved up in the international rankings in several fields and was included in a new list of disciplines. In the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, the University of Szeged achieved excellent results in several subjects and improved its previous ranking. SZTE achieved the best result in the field of Biological Sciences in Hungary, tying for first place in Hungary. The international ranking in this subject remains at 451-500.

Biology belongs to the subject area of life sciences and medicine in the QS ranking. The University of Szeged, maintaining its position from the previous year, is ranked 401-450, which puts it in a tie for second place in Hungary.

QS also ranks Medicine and Pharmacy & Pharmacology under the broader category of Life Sciences and Medicine. In the former, SZTE has moved up 50 places this year and is now ranked between 301 and 350, while in the latter it has maintained its position from last year and is also ranked between 301 and 350. In Hungary, both rankings are second in the QS list, proving that the University of Szeged is a leading institution in Hungary in the field of medical and pharmaceutical education and research.

The excellent performance of the University of Szeged is also reflected in its ranking in the list of Natural Sciences, where it was ranked 451-500 for the first time this year (a close third in Hungary), in the list of Chemistry (451-500, second among Hungarians) and in the list of Physics and Astronomy (601-620, fourth in Hungary).

Last year, the University of Szeged was ranked for the first time in the Engineering and Technology Subject Ranking for Computer Science and Informatics, achieving an international ranking of 651-670. This year, SZTE has improved its ranking in this field as well: 601-650, which is a podium third place in the national ranking.

In this year’s survey, one of the world’s most respected higher education ranking companies evaluated 1,594 higher education institutions in 5 disciplines and 54 fields, reviewing more than 16.4 million academic papers and 117.8 million references. The rankings take into account academic and employer assessments of institutions, with different weightings for each discipline; two indicators of the citation rate of scientific papers: the number of citations per paper and the Hirsch index; and the international diversity of research collaborations.
